The Service Council: A Glimpse Into Who We Are

Have you ever wanted to make a real difference in your community but didn’t know where to

start? Imagine a school where every student helps each other make an impact. That’s what

the Service Council aims to achieve!

The Service Council is a team of MYP and DP students who aim to raise awareness about

service in our school community and support students in completing their Service as Action

(SISA). They also collaborate with various NGOs to plan events and give students chances

to make a positive impact in the OIS community.

The students at the heart of ServCo work together to make service enjoyable, meaningful,

and accessible. You may be wondering who is who or who to reach out to:

● President: Simar Walia, the driving force behind planning meetings, smooth flow of

the council, and seamless communication to introduce brilliant ideas for service!

(simar.walia@oberoi-is.net)

● Vice Presidents: Inaya Goyal and Sofia Rangwala, the two people who assign

responsibilities and document agendas to bring ideas to life! (inaya.goyal@oberoi-

is.net) (sofia.rangwala@oberoi-is.net)

● Journalists: Kiara Doshi & Yashoda Bajpai Pathangay, work together to write updates

about service in the school community for Empower Weekly. Reach out to them if

you have any service projects, so we can feature you in an article!

(yashoda.bajpaipathangay@oberoi-is.net) (kiara.doshi@oberoi-is.net).

● Grade Representatives: Neev Mehta, Meira Warrier, Dia Saraf, Sifat Arora, Samaira

Aich, Shariva Chitale, Ethan Rajesh, Aarnav Singh, and Yohaan Kovoor. These are

the people from all MYP grade levels whom you can reach out to when you have

service-related suggestions or questions, especially if it’s about SISA! This is the

group of people prepared to assist you before you ask the concerned SISA teacher

for any doubts! (neev.mehta@oberoi-is.net), (meira.warrier@oberoi-is.net),

(dia.saraf@oberoi-is.net), (sifat.arora@oberoi-is.net), (samaira.aich@oberoi-is.net),

(shariva.chitale@oberoi-is.net), (ethan.rajesh@oberoi-is.net), (aarnav.singh@oberoi-

is.net), (yohaan.kovoor@oberoi-is.net).

Feel free to reach out to any of these members if you have any ideas for service-related

events, suggestions, or even questions related to SISA phases and process!.

So, now you know about the ServCo and its members, you might be wondering what we’ve

actually done so far. We have had 3 major events since the formation of this council at the

beginning of this academic year, all of which proved to be majorly successful and

influential among our student community.

Our first event is one you might have heard of and

participated in: The Service Fair!

This event brought numerous NGOs to our school, where

teachers, parents, and students from EYP to DP could

interact with the NGO representatives and gain insight into

the ways we can make the community in our city a more positive environment. Many students took the initiative to volunteer for NGOs they found

interesting, allowing them to support important causes and uplift someone in need.

The second event was SnehUtsav. In the spirit of the Diwali season, the Service Council

wanted to give back to the forces responsible for making our lives easier, whether they are

bus drivers, lifeguards, or part of the IT department. Throughout the day of this event, the

members of ServCo handed out gift bags made by the school community with sweets,

handwritten cards from students, and more goodies for the staff

to enjoy.

ServCo's next event, “It's a Small World”, was a cultural festival honouring the diverse backgrounds of our school, which happened from December 10 to December 12. Parents

and students had build booths to:

● Share their cultural cuisine.

● Showcase traditional crafts or objects

● Display their culture, literature, attire, decorations, or musical instruments

● Play music or dances from their culture

The event, which took place close to Winter Fest, was a fantastic way to unwind after

summatives, get to know one another, and enjoy incredible performances and food.

Additionally, a group of Grade 10 students, with assistance from the Service Council and

C3PO, organised a fundraiser for non-governmental organisations that our school supports.

All of these milestones are just the tip of the iceberg. We at the Service Council eagerly look

forward to bringing our school community together in many, many more ways! One of the

ways for us to stay connected with you is through our articles published on Empower

Weekly, where we highlight service, upcoming events and student initiatives.

We also want you, the middle school community, to share with us your wonderful ideas for

service-related projects aimed at giving back to the community by reaching out to your grade level representatives in the Service Council.

You can also tell us about your experiences with service through this Google form to

possibly be featured in one of our articles! This form is your chance to be a part of creating

an influential change in our community. We want you to know your ideas matter and can

have a positive effect on someone's day!

Signing off,

ServCo
