The Historical Events of April and May

Hello dear readers!

Have you ever wondered what moments created history? Especially in the months that we are currently living in?

The truth is, history is created everyday, but some historical events shaped the way we view and think about the world today. In this article, we’ll be exploring major events occurring in the past, influencing the  advancement of technology and innovation today.

First, we’ll begin with April. On April 12th, 1961, Soviet astronaut Yuri Gagarin was the first human being to go to space! Ever since that monumental feat, space travel will be forever influenced and showed that even with technological limitations, space vehicles and crafts function with the help of perseverance, determination and imagination.

Another major event that occurred in April was the start of the Renaissance period. If you are an art, literature or science enthusiast, the Renaissance era was the foundation for the development of the three, and it is likely that your favorite art piece, favorite classic works or scientific innovations were influenced by this period, believed to be re-ignited and pioneered by Italian poet Francis Petrarch.

Now, we move onto May. The month of May hosts some of the most exciting events and globally recognised history, including the success of Salk’s polio vaccine, creating one of the biggest medical and healthcare advancements recognized today. Dr. Jonas Salk’s vaccine was officially considered safe for use on May 26, 1955, being known as one of, if not the biggest, breakthroughs in public health.

Imagine this; you’re on your way to school, in the backseat of your parent’s car. You ask to turn on the radio and switch it to your favorite podcast. But, do you wonder how you’re able to listen to your favorite sports commentary or celebrity interviews? Well, it was first made legal on May 13, 1909, when the first legal radio transmission was released, reshaping the world of radio communication, being the start of something that would become one of the most globally recognized forms of communication and auditory entertainment.

These are only some of many famous and revolutionary occurrences that occurred during the months of April and May? Can you think of/find any more? Remember, some of the biggest revolutions that we know of today, could happen any day of the week, or everyday! It is important to recognize and celebrate some of the most culturally and socially important moments in history, and appreciate what gives us a positive outlook on creativity and imagination today.
