Across the world's most dangerous conflict zones, humanitarian workers risk their lives daily to save millions caught in the middle of a war. You could call these people changemakers. From Gaza to Yemen to the Democratic Republic of Congo, these brave changemakers don’t just provide emergency aid, they change lives.
According to recent reports, over 1,500 humanitarian workers have been killed in Gaza since the conflict escalated in late 2023. In Yemen, aid organisations faced challenges after dozens of aid workers were detained by Houthi forces. Meanwhile, in Congo, the WHO is battling an Ebola outbreak, all in the dust of ongoing violence.
But it doesn’t just end there. In Sudan, since violence came back in 2023, over 25 million people need humanitarian aid. Unfortunately, most convoys are blocked, most warehouses get looted, and health workers are targeted. In Myanmar, humanitarian access is so restricted that entire villages go without medicine for months. Local aid workers have to try to carry supplies on foot through jungles even under the threat of military airstrikes.
But did all this bloodshed and death stop these people? No. It didn’t. Humanitarian workers embody hope. They treat injured children in bombings. Bring clean water to families forced from their homes, and comfort those who have lost everything. Their courage and compassion create light even in the darkest times. These heroes remind us that change isn’t just about stopping the war. It’s about caring and building humanity in the rubble.
Every single act of kindness, every life saved sends a message. Even amidst destruction, people can be the change the world needs. Supporting these changemakers means supporting life itself. As students and global citizens, we can learn from their bravery and remember that change starts with showing up. Even when it’s hard. Especially when it’s hard.
