I’m sure most of you are familiar with famous artists and artworks such as Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh or Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, but have you ever heard of Ai Weiwei?
Ai Weiwei is both an artist and activist who is trying to make a change through his artworks. His artworks address the topic of human rights, freedom of expression and more, which has earned him worldwide respect and recognition. Some of his artworks include Sunflower Seeds and Remembering.
In Sunflower Seeds, Ai Weiwei filled an entire exhibition hall with millions of sunflower seeds, each carefully handcrafted by artisans in China. At first glance, it might seem like just a collection of seeds, but the artwork portrays individuality, community, and the strength of coming together.
Another artwork, Remembering, honors the children who lost their lives in the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, which affected many poorly built schools. Ai Weiwei covered a building with 9,000 backpacks, which formed the words: “She lived happily for seven years in this world.”
Full of creativity, passion and fierceness, he stands up for what’s right and shows us how art can inspire a change without words, just using strokes!
